To start being a mechanic, you should get a high school diploma and enroll in a technical school to receive either an associate's degree or certification in automotive service technology.

After this, a person can start being a mechanic and gain a variety of work experience. In order to progress their career, a person should invest time into achieving professional certifications.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is an organization that offers certification in nine specialty areas for auto mechanics, including engine restoration, heating and air-conditioning, electrical structures, brake systems, and steering.

By gaining these certifications, a mechanic will be able to stand out as knowledgeable in the industry and gain respect and increase their earning potential. If a person is certified in all nine automotive specialties offered by the ASE, they are able to hold the title of a master technician.
