How long does it take to become a project manager in IT?
It takes five to nine years to become a project manager in IT. The exact time it takes to become a project manager in IT depends largely on education and experience level.
IT project managers often hold a bachelor's degree in management, business, or a related field, and professional certification and extensive related experience. As part of their education, project managers may obtain a certificate or a master's degree in project management.
Many IT project managers have a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. The prerequisites for pursuing a PMP certification are:
A four-year degree
36 months leading projects
35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM Certification.
If you do not have 36 months of project management under your belt, there are still options that can help you on your way to becoming a project manager. These include taking certifications such as the PgMP (Program Management Professional), a CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) or a PMI-PBA (Professional in Business Analysis).
The good news is that those who only have a high school diploma or an associate's degree can still obtain a PMP. As long as they have at least 60 months of leading projects and still pursue the 35 hours of training. They must also pass an exam and participate in ongoing professional development.
