How many vacation days do teachers get?

By Justin Parker - Jun. 12, 2023

Most teachers get between 9 and 12 weeks of vacation days. However, the number of vacation days a teacher gets varies depending on the school district and state they work in. Most school teachers get the entire summer off, which can be an 8- to 10-week period, although there are some teachers who choose to instruct summer school during this time.

Most teachers also receive vacation days or weeks for certain holidays in which their students get off from school as well. Some examples of holidays and vacation weeks for holidays include:

  • Thanksgiving
  • Hanukkah and Christmas
  • Easter or Spring Break
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Labor Day

There are many other examples, and in fact, some states have specific holidays where teachers get off, while in other states the teaching populace will not receive the same day off. An example of this is Caesar Chavez Day in California, which is a holiday that most teachers in that state get off from school for, while this is not the case in most other states.
