What degree do you need to be a mechanic?
You do not need a degree to be a mechanic. A high school diploma is the minimum education requirement to be a mechanic. Some employers may prefer to hire those who have completed certifications or an associate's program in automotive technology or a related field.
Automobile manufacturers, vocational schools, and community colleges have training programs that award associate's degrees or certificates of completion in automotive service technology. In these programs, you will take courses in electronics, hands-on automotive repair, and computers.
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is an organization that offers certification in eight specialty areas for auto mechanics, including:
Engine restoration
Heating
Air conditioning
Electrical structures
Brake systems
Steering
Employer training for mechanics typically lasts two to three months and will involve working with experts like lubricant workers, trainee technicians, and automotive helpers. Mechanics can also choose to become master technicians by being certified in all eight automotive specialty areas offered by the (ASE).
