You need a bachelor's degree to be an analyst. Analyst roles generally require a bachelor's degree in math, business administration, economics, computer science or another related discipline. Analysts work in a variety of industries, and it can be beneficial if your degree is relevant to the field of the job for which you are applying.

The most common bachelor's degree in the profession includes business, finance, and accounting. While not necessary, around 14% of analysts have a master's degree in similar fields. The type of degree and courses you should focus on really come down to the type of analysis.

Examples of common types of analysts and recommended degrees:

  • Business or Finance Analyst: Bachelor's degrees in finance, accounting or economics will provide the classes and techniques required to hone an analyst's skills. On the technical side, degrees in math, engineering, statistics or computer science will also present opportunities to develop the data analysis skills this sort of job requires.

  • Data Analyst: Bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or information systems can give you the foundational technical skills you need as a data analyst. As data collection, management and analysis becomes more complex and technology advances, many employers are in search of candidates with master's degrees.

  • Information Analyst: Bachelor's degree in business administration, computer science, engineering, or other related fields. Although some employers may prefer to hire candidates with a master's degree.
