What degree do you need to be an architect?
You need a bachelor's degree to be an architect. To work as a professional architect you must be licensed. To become licensed as an architect you not only need to have a bachelor's degree, but also have completed an internship and passed the Architect Registration Examination.
An architect plans, designs and oversees the construction of buildings, which requires having an intimate relationship with the building design in relation to the site surrounding the buildings and what the ultimate function of the structure will be. To accomplish this requires extensive training. To get started, you will need to have a bachelor's degree in architecture.
Architect programs teach students how to draw and properly develop a set of working drawings of architectural and structural frames for residential buildings and other structures.
Program emphasis is on residential design and light commercial structures and the use of details, rough sketches, specifications, building codes, materials used in construction, and cost estimating all with a focus on urban and residential community building Students. Also, to create Computer-Aided Design (CAD) drawings using industry standard software such as Revit.
The next step is to complete a rigorous 3-year internship program under the mentorship of a licensed architect. Typically this is a paid internship.
Many internship training programs include hands-on experience working on project design, researching building codes, and building virtual or 3D models of resenditary design plans. The last step before you can get a license is to pass the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This exam is required in all states and tests your knowledge and skills in architecture.
Most states have continuing education requirements for licensed residential architects. Continuing education may include seminars, classes, workshops or conferences, as well as professional organizations such as the AIA, which provides members access to courses in topics including building science, design, legal matters, materials and project types.
