Who owns Dropbox?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

Drew Houston owns Dropbox. He is the co-founder and CEO of the file storage and sharing service that has more than 500 million users. Drew Houston founded the company in 2007 with his classmate from MIT, Arash Ferdowsi. Dropbox's initial funding came from seed accelerator Y Combinator.

The service has seen steady growth in the number of users over the years, surpassing 1 million in 2009, and by 2011, its user base jumped considerably to 50 million. In 2012, Dropbox acquired TapEngage, a start-up with a focus of enabling advertisers and publishers to work together on tablet-optimized advertising.

Soon after, Dropbox also acquired two additional companies; Audiogalaxy, a start-up that allows users to store their music files and playlists in the cloud and then stream to any device, and then Snapjoy, a company that provides a service to users of aggregating, archiving, and viewing all digital photos from their cameras, phones, and popular apps. These include Instagram and Flickr, where you are able to view them online via an iOS application.

In 2020, Dropbox had an annual revenue of $1.913 billion with a workforce of 2,548 employees.
