Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Interpreter performs more complex assignments requiring a combination of higher levels of training, skills, certification, and experience. The Interpreter provides American Sign Language and/or oral interpreting services to employees who are deaf, hard of hearing, and/or have other communication needs. Assignments for the Interpreter often involve high levels of interactive discussions requiring the interpreter to rapidly switch between spoken English and American Sign Language and vice versa. These assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Meetings, conferences, seminars, training, theatrical, and/or other platform settings where multiple consumers, including faculty, staff, and students are served simultaneously and which may require sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign translations.
In order to provide Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing employee the same access provided for hearing employees (taking into consideration language and cultural differences), the skilled Interpreter adapts terminology, language, instruction, concept, theory, and emotion to convey all aspects of the discussions, lectures, teaching material, and experiences. Meetings or seminars facilitated with specialized vocabulary, ideas, or concepts can be relayed successfully to the employee only if the interpreter has knowledge of the complex subject matter to a degree that provides for fluent, accurate, and specific translation in the language mode that the Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumer can readily understand. Ability to interpret and use a variety of registers consistent with diverse signers.
Preplan and prepare for logistics by knowing concepts and vocabulary, reading materials, presentations, and/or meeting with signers for dialog before an assignment.
Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate the skills, values, and commitment to cultural competencies and environmental awareness at the College.
Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate application of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).
Knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate application of Code of Ethics and maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge of and ability to adapt different styles of signing.
Preferred Qualifications
1. More than four (4) years of interpreting in a higher education setting for employees.
2. Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related field.
3. Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program.
4. 1,800 hours professional ASL interpreting.
License(s) & Other Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Sign Language Interpreter I: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of two (2) years' experience. OR
* Sign Language Interpreter II: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of three (3) years' experience and shall provide proof of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) in process.OR

Overview
We continuously recruit applicants to create a pool for temporary, hourly assignments as needed. This is not an on-call position. ASL Interpreters may be assigned a maximum of 29 hours per week dependent upon student need and interpreter availability. The DHH Center seeks qualified American Sign Language Interpreters with diverse cultural and linguistic skills to serve DHH students from intersectional backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Center, the interpreter performs a variety of assigned work providing American Sign Language to English and voice-to-sign interpreting services to students who are D/deaf or Hard-of-Hearing (and/or may have other communication needs) the equivalent access provided for hearing students. The interpreter will have the ability to interpret a wide variety of college level academic content to convey all aspects of the communication access need to provide the most dynamically equivalent student experience possible. Interpreting assignments may include but are not limited to classroom lectures, seminars, and labs; counseling and student services appointments; office hours, study groups, sporting events, field trips, guest speakers, and other special events. Thorough application of RID's Code of Professional Conduct is essential.
* Interpret proficiently in both English-to-ASL and ASL-to-English while accurately conveying the meaning, intent and spirit of participants.
* Rapidly process visual and audible information to convey complex concepts, specialized vocabulary and unexpected information to ensure student
comprehension and inclusion.
* Analyze situations accurately, evaluating alternatives, and adopting effective courses of action.
* Interpret, apply, and explain campus policies and procedures and reach sound decisions in areas applicable to the work.
* Maintain confidentiality
* Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive, complex and confidential student issues and situations.

Preferred Qualifications
* Minimum 3 years of interpreting experience in higher education OR equivalent content in secondary educational settings (i.e. dual enrollment curriculum) for high school students.
* Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in American Sign Language, interpreting, education, social work, or a related field.
* Successful completion of an Interpreter Training Program OR Interpreter Preparation Program
* 3,200 hours professional ASL interpreting.
License(s) & Other Requirements
1. Currently hold OR intend to fulfill Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpretation (CI) & Certificate of Transliteration (CT); National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Basic, Advanced, Master; National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level 4 or Level 5 Certification; EIPA 4.0; OR BEI
2. Employees may periodically be required to operate a vehicle that necessitates possession of a valid California driver's license. Such employees must have the ability to secure and maintain a valid California driver's license.
