SSIT company history timeline

1937

The sit-down was first used on a large scale in the United States during the United Automobile Workers’ strike against the General Motors Corporation in 1937.

1948

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948, includes civil rights language but is not binding on member states.

1956

Daniel B. Speed, who as leader of the Inter-Civic Council and heavily involved in civil rights protests, including the Tallahassee Bus Boycott in 1956, would later bail out the students.

1960

On March 12, 1960, members of CORE from FAMU and several white students form FSU joined together to create an interracial sit-in.

20 were tried and found guilty on March 17, 1960.

Although SNCC did develop out of the sit-in movement, becoming a permanent organization separate from CORE and the SCLC, the sit-ins faded out by the end of 1960.

1961

The first freedom riders left Washington, D.C., in May 1961 en route to New Orleans.

1964

These training activities led to the establishment of an academic institution—SIT—in 1964.

1968

In 1968 the United States Congress passed the Indian Civil Rights Act.

1990

International pressure combined with internal upheaval led to the eventual lifting of the ban on the African National Congress, the major Black party in South Africa, and the release from prison of Nelson Mandela in 1990.

1994

Mandela later became the first Black president of South Africa, in 1994.

1999

Launched in 1999, Softech Society of Information Technology (SSIT) continues to be one of India’s leading institutions of education and research in information technology.

2001

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Arab Americans suffered from heightened levels of discrimination and hate crimes and had to conform to government policies that restricted their liberties, as codified in the controversial USA PATRIOT Act of 2001.

2007

Today, SIT offers more than 80 accredited field-based semester and summer study abroad programs in more than 40 countries around the world, including, with the integration with International Honors Program in 2007, comparative programs in multiple locations.
