This question is about Intel.
Yes, Intel does drug test. Intel does both pre-employment drug screening, as well as random testing during employment, and testing after any accidents. Intel uses either a urine sample or mouth-swab drug test analyzed by a third-party company. The test looks for cannabis, alcohol, opiates, PCP, cocaine, and amphetamines.
Intel is committed to fulfilling its legal and ethical responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment on Intel premises. This commitment extends to all full-time, part-time, and contract workers.
After your last interview before onboarding, Intel contractors will ask you to take a urine analysis at a third-party lab within 72 hours. This test looks for cannabis, opiates, PCP, cocaine, and amphetamines.
Cannabis is considered a deal-breaker for the most part, even if you have a medical card or live in a state where it's legal. In some cases, however, the hiring manager may ask you to retake the test in 30 days.
Intel also is known to perform an onsite mouth-swab drug and alcohol testing if there is reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol impairment. "Reasonable suspicion" is present when an observation of a change in an employee's behavior or conduct indicates a noticeable performance impairment to the observer.
The employee in this situation must successfully pass the screen test within 72 hours prior to commencing an assignment at Intel. Any employee who does not successfully pass the screen test within 72 hours will be barred from accessing any Intel facilities.
In some cases, an employee may be put on suspension and asked to go to one of Intel's drug or alcohol dependency programs. Once the program is completed Intel will bring you back on for a temporary trial position. If that goes well you will be allowed to return to your position.
Intel does allow tobacco and vaping products to be used outside of the building in designated smoking areas. In light of COVID-19 and the resultant move to remote working, Intel recently started a policy that an employee can not be seen vaping on a work camera call.
