How are teachers paid?
Teachers are paid a salary for the months they work. One of the benefits of being a teacher is believed to be having the same basic school schedule as students. If kids have the summer off, so do their teachers. (Teachers need a break, too) This might be one of the benefits drawing you to look into teaching.
Being on the same schedule as your children means there's no need to pay for daycare or to spend more time apart. New teachers, however, are sometimes dismayed to realize that not working in the summer also means not getting paid during the summer. Saving money from each paycheck to have it for the summer can be hard to do.
Fortunately, many school districts offer teachers an answer to this dilemma but, here again, their solutions vary. Some schools may have a twelve months option available to their teachers. This gives teachers the option of spreading out their salary over twelve months instead of just the months they are in school.
The annual salary does not change under these circumstances, and it's simply the number of checks the teacher receives. For example, if a teacher's salary is $50,000 per year and they choose to be paid over twelve months, they will receive $4,166.67 per month.
If they choose to be paid over nine months, they will receive $5,555 per month for nine months.
Another option offered in some school districts is a school-year savings plan that pays in the summer. This offers teachers the option of designating a fixed amount that will be automatically deducted from each paycheck throughout the year and deposited into a different account.
This could be a checking or savings account. The money in the account earns interest, and when summer comes, the money from that account is deposited directly into the teacher's regular paycheck account. It can be in one lump sum or in equal amounts throughout the summer.
