How long does it take to become an HR generalist?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 12, 2021

It takes a minimum of six years to become an HR generalist. To become an HR generalist, a person needs to possess a bachelor's degree in Human Resources or a related field and about two years of work experience or a master's degree.

However, this is the bare minimum. Often, an HR generalist will have both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, including ten years of working experience, before they move into the HR generalist position.

HR generalists must be knowledgeable about every aspect of their profession. Including:

  • Recruitment and hiring

  • Benefits administration

  • Employment law and labor relations

  • Performance evaluations and employee relations

  • Training and strategic planning

Overall, an HR generalist needs significant education and experience to move into the role. Though a person can do that in about six years, generally, it takes ten to twelve years to become an HR generalist.
