Is there a difference between a realtor and a real estate agent?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 12, 2021

The main difference between a realtor and a real estate agent is the fact that realtors belong to an organization called the NAR. Although their responsibilities are very similar, there are a few key differences between realtors and real estate agents.

Real estate agents who belong to the NAR, or the National Association of Realtors, have the privilege of referring to themselves as realtors. In essence, a realtor is a real estate agent. Realtors, however, have an added degree of credibility and a positive reputation for belonging to this organization.

Real estate agents who join the National Association of Realtors must abide by a code of ethics enforced by the organization. This means that clients may feel an extra bit of trust towards realtors. This code demands that realtors always act in the best interest of their clients and several other ethical best practices.
