What do you need to be a data entry clerk?

The minimum qualification you need to be a data entry clerk is a high school diploma or its equivalent. While a person should also demonstrate attention to detail and knowledge of computers, many employers hire data entry clerks with no experience and train them on the data software they use.

Data entry is entering information into electronic formats using word processing or data processing software on a computer. Data entry clerks perform these tasks, though data entry sounds technical, many of these jobs do not require previous experience.

A person can become a data entry clerk with no experience if they are familiar with using computers and keyboards. Though keyboarding or typing speed requirements vary, all data entry operators should be able to enter data at employer-mandated keystrokes-per-hour, or KPH, speeds.

If a person has no data entry experience, they should practice typing and learn common computer programs. Low-cost or even free in-person and online computer introduction and keyboarding courses are available.
