What should I study to become a scientist?
You should study one of the areas of science in order to become a scientist. From biology to geology, there are dozens of science-based subsets that require the work of a scientist.
The minimum educational requirement for a scientist is a four-year bachelor's degree. A BS is one of many science-based subjects that will qualify you for entry-level positions as a scientist. While 60% of scientists have a bachelor's degree, nearly 36% possess either a master's or doctorate degree in their chosen field of scientific study.
Although there are numerous fields of scientific study, nearly 50% of scientists majored in either biology or chemistry. Biotechnology and physics represent the majors of 10% of scientists, with smaller numbers pursuing degrees in paleontology, botany, and agronomy.
Regardless of the specific area of science that you pursue, all scientists participate in a great deal of research. The results of a scientist's research may be published, as often happens in the medical and educational communities, or it may be used to advance technology or develop new products in the private sector.
