Who works under a chief operating officer?
Those who work under a chief operating officer include everyone at the company except the CEO and board of directors. A chief operating officer (COO) is considered the second-highest C-suite executive rank after the CEO. As such, everyone other than the CEO reports to the COO eventually, as ideas and plans move up the ladder.
Those reporting to senior executives like the COO can be considered influencers in their own right, as the top executives will often rely heavily on their VP-level staff for insights and recommendations. Unfortunately, there isn't a consistent set of titles that report to the COO.
The CEO and COO will commonly divide oversight of the various departments based on the internal business model. As a result, everyone from marketing, sales and operations to legal, product, and IT may report to one or the other.
The COO works closely with the CEO and the CFO as well as other executive management team members. The COO typically reports directly to the chief executive officer (CEO) and is considered to be second in the chain of command.
