Asha company history timeline
ASHA's rich history began in 1925 at an informal meeting of the National Association of Teachers of Speech (NATS) in New York City.
It was Carl Seashore, a professor of psychology and dean of the Graduate College at Iowa State University, who first started the snowball rolling in 1925.
The American School Health Association was founded as the American Association of School Physicians on October 27, 1927, by 325 physicians at the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association in Cincinnati.
In that year it changed its name to the American Society for the Study of Disorders of Speech, elected Elmer Kenyon as president, and made plans to hold a three-day symposium on stuttering in 1930.
In 1935, the Executive Council decided that the organization was strong enough to publish its own professional journal and G. Oscar Russell volunteered to be its editor.
The first president was William A. Howe, M.D., Buffalo, N.Y. Interest in the Association grew so rapidly that in 1936, the American Association of School Physicians opened its membership to all professionals interested in promoting school health.
ASHA has been the leader of these professions for almost 100 years, initiating the development of national standards for audiologist and speech-language pathologist certification since 1952.
