התעשייה האווירית לישראל - קריירה company history timeline

1959

In 1959 Bedek began manufacturing its first aircraft, a V-tailed twinjet trainer of French design, the Fouga CM.170 Magister, locally called Tzukit (Monticola). The Tzukit became the Israeli Air Force principal trainer for 50 years.

1967

The development of a domestic defense industry would become even more of a priority after France embargoed arms sales to the country after the Six Day War in 1967.

1969

The first, a V-tailed twinjet trainer of French design, was the Fouga-Magister or Snunit ("swallow"). The Arava STOL (short take-off and landing) transport aircraft followed as the first aircraft to be designed and built by IAI. It first flew in 1969 after three years of development.

1971

The Nesher entered service in 1971, in time for the Yom Kippur War.

1972

In 1972, the company had bought 13 Boeing 707 airliners from TWA to refurbish and resell.

1975

It was followed by the Kfir ("lion cub"), which was delivered in 1975.

1979

The only air victory claimed by a Kfir during its service with the IAF occurred on 27 June 1979 when a Kfir C.2 shot down a Syrian MiG-21.

1981

Elta was then specializing in high-tech intelligence tools, and its sales had grown from $70 million in 1981 to about $182 million a year.

1982

…but similar Scout, produced by Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI), proved effective in identifying and locating surface-to-air missiles and marking them for destruction during hostilities in Lebanon in 1982.

1986

IAI's biggest setback was the government's cancellation (by one vote in Parliament) of the Lavi program in August 1987. It first flew in 1986.

Former air force commander General Mordechai Hod became IAI's head in 1986.

1987

IAI's biggest setback was the government's cancellation (by one vote in Parliament) of the Lavi program in August 1987.

1988

Furthermore, much of the technical knowhow accumulated during the development of the Lavi contributed to the achievement of Israel’s first launch of a satellite into space in 1988.

The enterprise employed more than 22,000 people, but this was cut by 5,500 in 1988 as the company lost $21 million.

1990

Sales were $1.42 billion in 1990; exports were worth $1.1 billion.

In 1990, the Astra SP was unveiled; it featured advanced avionics and aerodynamics as well as a new interior (which was installed at the Fort Worth, Texas facility). The more powerful Astra SPX was developed a few years later.

1999

IAI's revenues were $2 billion in 1999.

2001

In May 2001, General Dynamics' Gulfstream Aerospace bought IAI's Galaxy Aerospace Co.

2001: Galaxy business jets are marketed by Gulfstream.

2003

Bedek had sales of $500 million in 2003, according to Globes.

In 2003, Israel Aircraft Industries attempted to enter the VLJ (very light jet) Market by launching the Avocet ProJet, a 6–8 seat high utilization air taxi with a list price almost half the cost of the least expensive business jet available at that time.

2005

2005: New G-150 business jet is unveiled.

2006

In early 2006, ProJet development stalled after a major undisclosed US OEM pulled out of the program due to unspecified reasons.

2008

ATG halted development of the Javelin in 2008 due to a lack of funds.

2009

On 13 April 2009, the Moscow Times reported that the Russian Defense Ministry had signed an agreement with Israel Aerospace to purchase $50 million in pilotless drone aircraft.

2012

On 4 September 2012, the Gulfstream G280, a new twin-engine business jet built by IAI, received full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

2016

Since then, a total of 11 Ofek satellites have been produced and launched, the most recent one in 2016.

2017

The G150 midsize business jet model is certified by the FAA. 120 units were built before production ceased in 2017.
