Varsity Bus history

In 1932, a controversy about some of its stories resulted in the editor being challenged to a duel, and the following year the paper went bankrupt (having lost £100).

On 19 April 1947, Varsity reappeared, its first issue headlining the coming visit of the then Princess Elizabeth to the university (a visit that ultimately would be cancelled). Its first print run was of 5,000 copies.

National Cheerleaders had been founded by Lawrence Herkimer in 1948.

In 1955, a one-off Oxford edition of the paper was produced by the then editor Michael Winner.

Webb left National Cheerleaders in 1974 and, at the age of 23, started a company that he called Universal Cheerleaders Association.

By 1979 the company was generating $2 million from its training camps.

Buoyed by external financing, Universal Cheerleaders Association was able to increase its annual revenue base from barely more than $2 million in 1980 to about $10 million going into the late 1980s.

In this way, pop and mainstream culture became acquainted with the varsity jacket, and in 1983 the varsity jacket became a sought-after item: Michael Jackson wore a red and gold one with an “M” on the chest in the video for “Thriller”.

Of import was the 1985 purchase of a Winona, Minnesota-based concern called Varsity Spirit Fashions.

Strengthened by that addition, Universal's Varsity Spirit division and cheerleading camp unit were each capturing sales of about $5 million per year by 1987.

By 1989 Universal was bringing in more than $20 million in annual sales.

The deal loaded Universal with debt until the investment group took the company public in 1992.

In 1993 Varsity Spirit trained 116,000 cheerleaders at 600 camps held on campuses throughout the United States.

With the score tied and the bases loaded, Riley Montanye hit a sharp ground ball to the shortstop whose throw home was behind the catcher and allowed Tamsett to slide safely into home to give Canjo it’s first sectional title since 2010.
