The Transportation Unit Leader serves as a frontline operations leader within HISD's Transportation Department, directly overseeing the daily performance and compliance of approximately 20 bus drivers and transportation attendants. This position plays a vital role in ensuring safe, efficient, and student-centered transportation services that support the district's instructional mission.
Aligned with HISD's high-performance culture and commitment to equity, the Transportation Unit Leader is responsible for monitoring attendance, supporting fleet readiness, addressing student-specific needs, and fostering a culture of teamwork and accountability. This role ensures daily operations meet the district's expectations for service reliability, regulatory compliance, and safe student travel.
MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Monitor Attendance & Time Compliance
* Track and oversee clock-in/out activity to ensure staff punctuality and attendance accuracy.
* Review timekeeping reports, resolve discrepancies, and monitor overtime to manage direct and indirect labor hours effectively.
2. Ensure Fleet Readiness & Operational Coordination
* Collaborate with the Fleet Department to confirm all assigned buses are road-ready each day.
* Ensure drivers complete pre-trip inspections, follow vehicle cleanliness protocols, maintain appropriate fuel levels, and park according to terminal procedures.
3. Support Safe Transportation for Special Populations
* Help implement transportation procedures tailored to students with disabilities, ensuring alignment with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
* Reinforce staff understanding of medical, behavioral, or physical accommodations required for specific student riders.
4. Promote Student Safety & Attendant Development
* Support and train attendants in student supervision and safety practices during transport.
* Participate in professional development and departmental training to remain informed and responsive to student needs.
5. Complete Administrative & Compliance Functions
* Maintain accurate records and support clerical tasks related to routing, service delivery, and operational tracking.
* Prepare monthly schedules and generate reports that support documentation requirements, including those tied to Medicaid reimbursement.

* Secure substitute coverage for driver absences and be available to operate routes during emergencies or staff shortages, ensuring uninterrupted student transportation.

* Collaborate with dispatch, terminal leadership, and Transportation Coordinators to address challenges and improve overall service quality.
8. Perform Other Duties as Assigned
* Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and professionalism in supporting additional tasks or projects that contribute to the department's mission of safe, reliable service for all HISD students.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree or 7 years of related job experience.

SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION
Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement as well as a valid Texas School Bus Driver Certification

Summer Camp Teacher
The FAYcation Summer Camp Teacher is a non-benefits-eligible, temporary stipend position for the duration of the Summer Camp program, typically four weeks in June, with a Monday - Friday work schedule of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This role reports to the Director of Extended Day and is responsible for creating a flexible, engaging camp environment that promotes learning, exploration, and personal growth.
The Summer Camp Teacher develops and executes weekly lesson plans and actively participates in all general camp activities, including snack time, lunch, and recess. They build positive relationships with campers, foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, and encourage the development of skills, confidence, and knowledge in alignment with each camper's individual abilities. In addition, Summer Camp Teachers maintain effective communication with parents, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to a cohesive and vibrant camp community.
Responsibilities include the following:
Displays extensive pedagogical knowledge and expands on this knowledge using various resources.
Uses a variety of teaching techniques suitable to the age and needs of the students and subject matter.
Collaborates with colleagues and the Extended Day office in the design and/or implementation of curriculum within the context of the Camp's overall program and mission.
Effectively utilizes the Assistant Teacher.
Maintains self-awareness and utilizes self-monitoring in identifying and solving student, curricular, and camp problems. At the same time, the teacher knows the mission and policies of the Camp and, when questions or concerns arise, raises them with appropriate colleagues and supervisors.
Models integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all persons as well as an appreciation for racial, cultural, religious and gender diversity.
Contributes observations and anecdotes and collects photos for newsletters and photo publications.
Knows and effectively executes safety procedures.
Prepares learning spaces for use and decorates according to theme.
Makes purchases for school use only in accordance with guidelines and as preauthorized.
Participates in carpool, lunch and snack supervision, student transitions, and specials and early care rotations coverage.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Extended Day and the Head of School.

Ability to perform certain physical tasks including sustained standing and walking, navigating stairs and hills, kneeling, lifting, and carrying up to 20 lbs., monitoring children and the immediate environment visibly and audibly and the ability to give audible instructions that can be understood by English speakers in a loud environment.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
