1997 The F.D.A. allows sunscreen makers to market the fact that their products contain avobenzone for UVA protection.

2002

The $28 billion per year toiletries industry spent $8.0 billion in 2002 on the total cost of materials needed to make all kinds of toiletries.

2005

The market for all cosmetics and toiletries in the United States was $30.1 billion in 2005 as reported by the Annual Survey of Manufactures conducted by the United States Bureau of the Census.

2006

Sun exposure is dangerous, there is rising demand for the product, and, as exemplified by the FDA June 2006 approval of ecamsule, the list of approved ingredients is expanding.

Ecamsule is also known by its trade name Mexoryl SX. The FDA approved it in July 2006 under an application by L'Oréal (which owns LaRoche-Posay). Mexoryl SX provides UVA protection at the short UVA range.

Action on the Temporary Final Monograph has been postponed many times over the years and was stayed once again in 2006.

2007

2007 The F.D.A. finalizes its proposed rules on UVA testing and labeling and starts accepting comments on the proposals.
