1820

Finland: Daily life and social customs …in northern Finland, the spruce Christmas tree is a relative newcomer to the country, having made its first appearance in the 1820s.

1851

The first commercial calendars were printed in Germany in 1851.

1857

Also on March 8, in 1908, women workers in the needle trades marched through New York City's Lower East Side to protest child labor, sweatshop working conditions, and demand women’s suffrage. It began in New York City on March 8, 1857, when female textile workers marched in protest of unfair working conditions and unequal rights for women.

1910

Beginning in 1910, March 8 became annually observed as International Women's Day.

1926

In 1926 Doctor Carter G. Woodson instituted the first week-long celebration to raise awareness of African Americans’ contributions to history.

1948

On December 10 in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

1968

The event began in 1968 when Congress deemed the week including September 15 and 16 National Hispanic Heritage Week to celebrate the contributions and achievements of the diverse cultures within the Hispanic community.

​​​​​​Latinx Heritage Month started as a weeklong celebration in 1968, and has grown to a month from September 15 through October 15 to incorporate the independence days of Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua.

1969

Pride Month was created to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion which took place on June 28, 1969, considered by historians to be the start of the modern LGBTQ+ movement.

Cuba: Religion The government removed Christmas from its list of national holidays in 1969.

1976

In response to an effort by many to gain a day of recognition for the great influence American Indians have had upon the United States, Congress designated a week of October to celebrate Native American Awareness Week in 1976.

1978

Women’s History Week was instituted in 1978 in an effort to begin adding women’s history into educational curricula.

1979

The observance began in 1979 as Asian Heritage Week, established by congressional proclamation.

1982

Women's History Month began as a smaller "Women's History Week" on March 7, 1982, and was later petitioned by the National Women's History Project to become a month-long celebration.

1987

In 1987, the National Women's History Project successfully petitioned Congress to include all of March as a celebration of the economic, political and social contributions of women.

1990

In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George Bush signed a proclamation making it month-long for that year.

Yearly legislation was enacted to continue the tradition until August of 1990, when President Bush approved the designation of November as National American Indian Heritage Month.

2006

Jewish American Heritage Month was proclaimed by President George W. Bush on April 20, 2006.

2021

Celebrate Women's History Month at Harvard from March 1 to March 31, 2021.

On October 8, 2021, United States President Joe Biden became the first United States President to formally recognize the holiday, by signing a presidential proclamation declaring October 11, 2021 to be a national holiday.

2022

February 1, 2022: The Lunar New Year marks the first new moon of the lunar calendar and is derived from 12 full cycles of the moon.

June 20, 2022 (observed): Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.
