Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Implement Trail construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects in cooperation with A.T clubs and partner agencies.
Determine logistical needs in advance to ensure that appropriate tools, equipment, materials, and other necessary resources are available to complete assigned projects.
Ensure volunteer and/or staff trail crew members are trained in and implement best practices in Trail design, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance according to ATC and land managing agency standards.
Ensure safe and sanitary conditions at field camps and work sites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to any emergency situations that may arise.
Promote an atmosphere in which all crew members feel welcomed, motivated, safe, and included, and where participation and contributions from all are valued and appreciated.
Follow the direction of designated supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables, projects, submit biweekly timesheets, weekly hour and project reports, and perform other duties as assigned.
Ensure purchases of food, supplies, gear, and materials follow ATC's financial procedures.
Travel on foot over rough terrain and for long distances while carrying equipment in possible inclement weather.
Assist Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer transportation, volunteer basecamp orientation, routine camp maintenance or other duties as scheduled or required.
Qualifications
Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors.
At least one season of trail crewleadership
At least one season of experience in building/rebuilding trails: constructing new sidehill, stone steps or cribbing, log steps or cribbing, improving drainage, addressing erosion, etc.
Ability to manage and be responsible for all aspects of a trail crew.
In good mental and physical health, ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups and partners.
Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
Strong hiking and outdoor experience.
Experience working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.

Duties/Responsibilities
* Ensures crew maintains professional relations with Owner, Engineer, and other members of the team.
* Builds job by plans and specifications as directed by supervisor.
* Prior to commencing work activities, develops and executes an effective plan in cooperation with the Superintendent for his/her area of responsibility and determines the means and methods necessary (including individual work activities) to meet project goals.
* Assures the proper storage of materials and rented equipment, including regular checks of job for material and equipment inventory.
* Assures the proper operation and maintenance of equipment under their control, including appropriate applications for the respective equipment.
* Knowledgeable of inspection requirements and material or equipment requirements.

* Prepares or assists the Superintendent in the preparation of daily reports, work unit quantity reports, equipment reports, and receipt of materials.

Qualifications
* High School Diploma or Equivalent
* 3+ years' experience in managing a crew in heavy highway/bridge construction
* 5+ years of heavy civil/structures construction experience.

* Strong communication and collaboration skills with experience working in a team environment.
* OSHA 10 Certification
* Must have a valid driver's license and must meet Branch Group Fleet Policy requirements and maintain "Approved Driver" status.

Organizational Mission:
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy's mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Highly qualified seasonal trail crewleaders are recruited each year to lead crews that complete routine trail maintenance, major rehabilitation/repair, and relocation projects in both front-country and remote backcountry settings along the Appalachian Trail from Georgia. These critical positions manage trail crews, train, and supervise crew member volunteers and staff to complete high quality work, ensure crew is operating safely both in camp and on the worksite, and respond to emergency situations. Applicants must demonstrate responsibility, initiative, effective communication skills, and self-motivation. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively as a member of a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Implement trail construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects in cooperation with A.T clubs and partner agencies.
Determine logistical needs in advance to ensure that appropriate tools, equipment, materials, personnel, and other necessary resources are available to complete assigned projects.
Ensure volunteer and/or staff trail crew members are trained in and implement best practices in Trail design, construction, reconstruction, and maintenance according to ATC and land managing agency standards.
Ensure safe and sanitary conditions at field camps and work sites, transport crews safely, and respond appropriately to any emergency situations that may arise.
Promote an atmosphere in which all crew members feel welcomed, motivated, safe, and included, and where participation and contributions from all are valued and appreciated.
Follow the direction of designated crewleader or supervisors with respect to duties, logistics, timetables, projects, submit biweekly timesheets, process and submit photos and crew narratives weekly, and perform other duties as assigned.
May assume the duties of CrewLeader in their absence.
Ensure purchases of food, supplies, gear, and materials following ATC's financial procedures.
Travel on foot over rough terrain and for long distances while carrying equipment in possible inclement weather.
Assist Basecamp Coordinator with volunteer transportation, volunteer basecamp orientation, routine camp maintenance or other duties as scheduled or required.
Qualifications
Two or more seasons of front/backcountry camping or working outdoors.
At least one season of trail crew work experience.
At least one season of experience in building/rebuilding trails: constructing new sidehill, stone steps or cribbing, log steps or cribbing, improving drainage, addressing erosion, etc.
Ability to manage and be responsible for all aspects of a trail crew.
In good mental and physical health, ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to effectively communicate with individuals, groups, and partners.
Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
Strong hiking and outdoor experience.
Experience in working with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day in steep, mountainous terrain.
Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system preferred.

Compensation
June SOAR: $500 ($250.00 to be paid at the beginning of employment and remainder upon completion of the SOAR contract) + housing and meals when the Burton Dining Hall is open. You will be responsible for your own meals outside of the Dining Hall hours.
Hornet Days: $400 ($200.00 to be paid at the beginning of employment and remainder upon completion of the Hornet Days contract). Early Arrival and move-in on campus for residential Hornet Crewleaders and housing for non-residential Hornet Crewleaders for the duration of Hornet Days only. Meals scheduled in the dining hall as part of Hornet Days will be paid for. You will be responsible for the cost of any meals outside of the scheduled dining hall hours.

Essential Job Functions:
Certification and Training from Petroleum Equipment Manufacturer's a plus (we will provide all necessary training)
Valid Driver's License and good driving record
Experience with Petroleum Construction is a MUST! (I.E. Have you built gas stations before?)
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
Ability to work well with others
Ability to Operator Heavy Equipment (backhoe, trackhoe, skid steer) a plus
Communicate with Project Managers, subcontractors, local and state inspectors and vendors
Out of town travel from time to time
Field construction experience running a crew and working with sub-contractors
Monitor and maintain schedules for crew and subcontractors
Document daily activities, material/parts used, testing, inspections and visitors. Create and maintain positive working relationships with crew members, vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to maintain a timely flow and complete projects on time and on budget.
Ensure a safe working environment.
Procure equipment & supplies needed, plan out project to minimize costs
Strong work ethic, detail oriented, reliable with strong communication skills
Experience installing fuel handling equipment.
Must obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Card
Requirements
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience with Petroleum Construction is a MUST!

Work Environment:
This job operates in a warehouse, office, or outdoor environment (construction site).
Physical Demands:
This role is half sedentary and half physical. Successful candidates should be able to lift 25 pounds, move across the construction site without stopping, and be able to stand on a job site for an extended period of time if needed.
