    Full-time Description Performs skilled and unskilled maintenance of the Town's parks and common recreation areas in a leadership capacity. II. Major Duties and Responsibilities The employee in this class performs a variety of entry to advanced level work. Employee monitors and reviews work in progress and ensures work is completed safely and within deadlines. Serves as lead worker over assigned crew of full and part-time temporary employees; ensures specific maintenance and/or repair is completed in accordance with work orders, in timely manner and following safety standards. Performs grounds' maintenance duties including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, and assisting with horticultural practices such as fertilizing, planting and spreading seed and lime. Performs landscaping duties including pruning, planting and mulching flower and shrub beds and trees. Performs maintenance, minor construction, and repair duties on recreational facilities and, playgrounds, picnic areas, and other recreational areas; checks equipment for safety; paints; and repairs plumbing. Drags and marks ball fields and levels dirt infields and base lines; may operate tractor with drag and lining attachments; operates front end loader, dump truck, riding and hand mowers, weed eater, blower, chainsaw and other maintenance equipment. Sprays various herbicide and pesticide treatments in landscape. Drives a truck and picks up supplies. With direction from the department, participate in natural disaster clean-up. Assist with sand fence repair. Maintain the beach accesses to allow for emergency vehicles. Assist with holiday decoration set up and removal. Assigning and placing work orders. Oversee the Community Service Workers. III. Controls The Parks Maintenance Crew Leader works under the general supervision of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor. This position is non-exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. IV. Physical Requirements or Special Working Conditions Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, standing, crouching, crawling, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, vibration, hazards associated with parks maintenance work, fumes, odors, dust, mists and oils. Duties involving equipment operation may result in exposure to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Requirements V. Qualifications and Experience Judgment and initiative is required. Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in the parks and recreation maintenance. Working knowledge of the work hazards, related liabilities, and applicable safety standards (Occupational Safety and Health Act). Working knowledge of turf management and landscaping methods and techniques. Skill in the operation of assigned equipment and tools, including tractor, drag and line attachments, complex riding mowers, chain saws, etc. Follow through with instructions to ensure work is completed correctly and safely. Communicate effectively in oral and written forms, as well as work well independently and within a team setting. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders; supervisors, citizens, coworkers and visitors, who are involved in use of parks, athletic fields and recreational activities. Physical ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in an outdoor setting. Exercise courtesy and tact in dealing with the public and with other employees. Minimum Educations and Certifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and Considerable related experience supplemented by training in landscaping and turf management that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Possession NC Pesticide License. Possession of a NC Turf and Ornamentals Pesticide License, or the willingness to become licensed. Possession of Lift Training Certification.
