Internship job in Baltimore, MD
Join a Pulitzer Award Winning Newsroom! The Banner 2026 Summer Newsroom Internship Program
This is a paid internship opportunity.
Hours: 40 hours per week
Schedule: Some nights and weekends
Location: 621 East Pratt Street | Baltimore, Maryland, 21202
Application Deadline: November 14, 2025
About the Internship:
Are you a visionary interested in working in a fast-paced environment focused on delivering the best digital local news?
The Banner newsroom is looking for News, Arts and Culture, and Photo interns to experience work-life in our newsroom this summer. Interns will be responsible for producing content - photos, stories, and social media posts - for the local digital publication. Interns will receive assignments from editors but should also be able to generate and pitch their own interesting story ideas. We are looking for people who are quick thinkers, energetic, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. They should be able to come up with “outside the box ideas” and have strong digital storytelling skills. Each intern will pitch a “passion project,” whether it be an enterprise story, photo collage or Instagram story, to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions on subjects such as sourcing and interview skills.
What You'll Do:
News Reporter Intern - As a News Reporter intern, you will cover and array of topics- ranging from breaking news, local government, criminal justice and in-depth feature stories - allowing you to develop your reporting, writing and sourcing skills. We are looking for interns who are quick thinkers, eager to chase stories, and ready to contribute fresh, “outside-the-box” ideas. You should have a natural curiosity and be open to feedback from editors and other reporters. While you will write your own stories, you may be asked to help other reporters on their stories as well. Interns will receive assignments from editors but are also encouraged to pitch their own story ideas.
Arts and Culture Reporter Intern - The Banner newsroom is looking for an arts and culture intern to join us in our newsroom this summer. Interns will be responsible for writing about creative scenes throughout the Baltimore area and covering the region's art institutions, including (but not limited to) theaters, music halls, art galleries and museums. Reporters should also be prepared to write daily, news stories in addition to longer-term features. They should be able to develop outside-the-box ideas and have strong digital storytelling skills. Each intern will pitch a “passion project,” whether an enterprise story, photo collage or Instagram story, to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions on sourcing and interview skills.
Photo Intern - We are looking for a creative photo intern who can bring our stories to life through visuals and across platforms - whether it's through Instagram, TikTok, videography, or other digital media. We're seeking someone who thrives on collaboration, embraces challenges, and thinks outside the box. You'll work closely with our editors, but you'll also have the freedom to pitch and pursue your own projects. From quick-turn daily assignments to a personal “passion project,” you'll develop skills in digital storytelling, sourcing, and interviewing. Plus, you'll be paired with a mentor and attend weekly workshops that will help you sharpen your skills. If you're eager to engage a new generation of readers with compelling visual storytelling, we'd love to see what you can do!
Sports Reporter Intern - An intern in this role will report on Baltimore's professional, college, and high school sports teams in an area where readers are heavy into sports. Interns will write a mix of enterprise and breaking news daily stories, some of which they will come up with on their own and some that will be assigned by editors. We ae looking for self-starters with good ideas who can tell compelling stories. Interns should be flexible and urgent, with a willingness to jump on any story assigned to them. They should be a team player who can help out on stories when other reporters need it. Ideal candidates should have strong writing skills, a passion for sports, and familiarity with social media platforms. Join us in delivering the latest sports news while developing your skills in a dynamic newsroom environment!
Sports interns are chosen through the Sports Journalism Institute. Application is here: *******************************************************
What you'll bring:
Experience from a college newspaper or previous internship
Interesting story ideas

Ability to work independently and as a team member
