How can I become an educator?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 17, 2021

You can become an educator by getting a bachelor's degree in education. People enrolled in bachelor's of education programs often have a second major or specialization, such as English, history, or special education, that will guide what kind of educator they will become.

Many states, certifications, and degree programs require a person to complete a certain amount of credit hours as a student-teacher (also known as a teaching assistant). The first half of the time as a student-teacher is typically observation of a teacher in another class.

The latter portion of this time is spent developing and implementing a curriculum in the class you are assisting under the supervision of the mentor teacher. Once a person has completed their student-teaching hours and finishes their degree program, they must take their state-specific teacher certification exam.

This exam tests both your ability and knowledge of teaching as well as your understanding of your specialty. While what score is needed to pass may vary by state, all prospective teachers take the same exams.
