We are seeking linguists who speak Vietnamese at an Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Level 2 + or higher. About ILR levels: The Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale is the U.S. government standard for measuring language proficiency. It ranges from Level 0 (No Proficiency) to Level 5 (Native or Bilingual Proficiency). • ILR Level 2+ (“Professional Working Proficiency”) indicates that a linguist can speak, understand, read, and write the language with sufficient accuracy and fluency to participate effectively in most conversations on practical, social, and some professional topics. Position Overview: Linguists will provide accurate, impartial, and confidential interpretation and translation services at ILR Level 2+ proficiency or higher to support communication between Care Staff, unaccompanied children (UC), unaccompanied minors (UAM), and unaccompanied refugee minors (URM). Linguists serve as Communication Liaisons to ensure all parties can fully understand one another in a variety of settings. Key Responsibilities: • Provide in-person, onsite interpretation at Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) programs and service locations (preferred). • Deliver remote interpretation services via telephone, videoconference, or other virtual means as needed, including availability for 24/7 requests. • Facilitate communication of important deadlines, instructions, questions, and other information between Care Staff and UC/UAM/URM in their native or preferred language. • Assist UC/UAM/URM in expressing concerns, questions, or needs when they are not fluent or comfortable communicating in English or the language spoken by Care Staff. • Demonstrate a high-level of professional judgment, based on the candidate's own experience and language proficiency, to mitigate language barriers and ensure effective communication between Care Staff and a UC, UAM or URM. • Support the orientation of UC/UAM/URM to available community resources through interpretation and translation. • Translate documents from English to the preferred language and vice versa, and occasionally from other source languages, as required. • Help Care Staff build rapport and understand the cultural context of the populations served; while linguists are not substitutes for case managers or clinicians, they play a vital role in establishing a cultural bridge and alleviating stress for the children. Requirements: • ILR Level 2+ proficiency in both English (listening and speaking) and the target language (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) whether obtained through either a specialized academic degree or a combination of experience/education. • Successful completion of a Tier 2 background check; no security clearance required. • Consistent exercise of discretion and judgment and advanced knowledge in the field of linguistics. • The linguist is expected to apply advanced language skills, cultural expertise, and professional judgment to facilitate communication in sensitive and complex situations. • The work requires autonomy, decision-making, and a high degree of responsibility in managing language services to meet the needs of ORR programs and the vulnerable populations served. Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required) Personnel providing educational interpreting services for children using sign language shall have a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III, or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 3.5 or higher along with a passing score on the EIPA written test, or possess a current National Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) (excluding Certificate of Deaf Interpretation) as recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing(VDDHH). Personnel who provide interpreting services for children who use sign language and who do not hold the required qualifications shall have a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level II, EIPA 3.0 - 3.4, or its equivalent, as determined by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, upon hiring date in any local educational agency in Virginia. Personnel will have two years from the date of hire to reach the required qualifications. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public. Personnel providing educational interpreting services for children using Cued Speech must have a valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level III for Cued Speech or hold a national Transliteration Skills Certificate from the Testing, Evaluation and Certification Unit (TEC Unit) or equivalent recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Personnel who provide interpreting services for children who use Cued Speech and who do not hold the required qualifications shall have a VQAS level I or the equivalent from another state upon hiring date in any local educational agency in Virginia.     Full-Time, Non-Exempt through 2029 The Education and Guest Services (EG&S) Division provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon's one million annual onsite visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging programs, and online resources, we expand each learner's understanding of and appreciation for George Washington and the revolutionary world in which he lived. The Interpretation Department provides access for guests to the history and expertise at George Washington's Mount Vernon. With experts in interpretation, this department can connect current scholarship to a wide range of visitors and groups, utilizing both innovative and traditional techniques. The Department of Character Interpretation provides special educational engagement by authentically portraying people from Washington's world using first-person interpretive methodology with third-person as needed. The Department consists of 5 full-time and 2 part-time staff. This position is funded through 2029. Compensation: $19.00/hour Expected Hours: 40 hours per week, including some weekends, evenings, and holidays. Essential Duties: * Create a positive learning environment for guests of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable, and engaging. Encourage participation in impromptu and planned interactions. * Research, develop, train, coach, and deliver programming on Religion, Religious Freedom, George Washington's religious practices and beliefs, and his role in establishing the precedent for religious freedom in the American Constitution. * Provide guests with accurate, interesting, and pertinent historical information about George Washington and Mount Vernon. Follow departmental interpretive strategies to effectively integrate interpretation into the overall guest learning experience. * Accurately portray predetermined historical persons in order to provide an immersive, thoughtful, and entertaining experience. Maintain an appearance that is appropriate for the person being portrayed and closely adhere to 18th-century standards of etiquette/deportment. Remain in character where practical. Special circumstances, such as educational purposes, crowd control, or other reasons, may require breaking character. * Thoroughly research the designated historical identity and all relevant persons in order to establish a comprehensive understanding of the character's life and times. Identify and prepare for frequently asked guest questions. Assist the Manager of Character Interpretation with developing new characters, programs, and other special projects as needed. * Write, practice, and perform dramatic presentations as requested for special public programs, private events, and outreach initiatives, which may be on or off-site. Qualifications: * Previous interpretive experience with a proven talent for performing formally and informally in a variety of settings and conditions is a prerequisite. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required. Must work well with a diverse audience and have a sincere interest in history. * Must be responsible, flexible, punctual, and able to work well under pressure. * Ability to work creatively and effectively as a member of a team is mandatory Work Environment: This position involves working in both indoor museum settings and outdoor historic grounds. The role requires frequent interaction with visitors and groups in varying weather conditions. The noise level can fluctuate from quiet to moderate. Physical Requirements: This role requires extended periods of standing and walking, including over uneven terrain. The employee may need to climb stairs or inclines and occasionally lift or carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds. Clear verbal communication and auditory ability are essential. Division-Wide Principles: The Education and Guest Services team comprises the Interpretation, Historic Trades, Guest Services, and Learning Departments. In total, this group comprises more than 150 full- and part-time staff members who connect Mount Vernon's mission to a variety of audiences through onsite and offsite programming, as well as physical and digital projects. * Exceed audience learning expectations and ensure a level of access in which everyone is welcome.
