I have performed a variety of technology work for both established companies and startups. Over more than 20 years as a contractor (both for agencies and independently), most of my clients have been media, publishing, or internet-related companies, although I've worked in a number of other verticals including finance, education, government, and retail/e-commerce. I gravitate towards startups.

I am skilled at performing a wide variety of application development and architecture roles, from initial requirements gathering and application design to development, technical project management, functional and usability testing, documentation, and deployment. I am an experienced linux/bsd system administrator (including high availability cluster configuration and tuning). I am experienced with the business side of startup management, but have also worked for very large companies. I have particular strengths in designing distributed web application scaling architectures and in designing large collaborative data/user interaction flows.

I administer a number of mailing lists and private developer communities, I am well versed in a variety of modern web application specifics, and I write long form technology, social, and consumer electronics criticism on my blog with no discernible schedule.

With very little advance notice, I can prepare a gourmet meal for up to eleven people. I am a strong advocate of supporting local farmer's markets.

I will make you laugh periodically.

Specialties: Web application architecture; database design, performance and scalability analysis and implementation; usability enhancement, technical project management.

My platforms of preference include Ruby/Ruby on Rails, AWS/EC2, MySQL, and MongoDB. My favorite linux distro is gentoo, but I'm fine with some of the other ones.
