General description
Facilitates communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and teachers, staff members, and peers within an educational environment, using a variety of manual and verbal communication systems in a highly proficient manner reflecting the affect of the speaker and/or signer. The Interpreter for Deaf/Hard of Hearing facilitates communication through the use of sign-to English and English-to-sign skills. This position requires course work, Level 4 certification, and competency using manual sign systems.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Interprets for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in a variety of educational settings, including, but not limited to, classroom environments, assemblies, recess, noon sport leagues, and counseling sessions using various signlanguage systems and voice interpretation at a normal conversational rate
Interprets a wide range of curriculum, including scientific and advanced placement topics
Consults with the teachers of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing, general education staff and typical students on the effective use of an interpreter
Provides voice interpretation to individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing as needed
Collaborates with IEP teams to standardize signs in an educational setting
Under the direction of the teacher of the deaf or hard of hearing, performs record keeping, monitoring IEP or special education related activities that support student learning
Provides assistance to the classroom teachers as required; assists in filing, duplicating and preparing instructional materials
Interprets and provides instruction as needed to individuals or small groups of students who are deaf or hard of hearing; reinforce instruction as directed by the teacher
Follows professional conduct guidelines to guard against the development of inappropriate personal relationships with students

Requirements
Education: Possession of an associate's degree in American SignLanguageInterpreting, Deaf Studies, Deaf Education or related field is preferred.
Experience: At least one year of experience providing instructional support in an educational setting is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
Specialized knowledge of expressive and receptive forms of signlanguage systems, which may include American SignLanguage, Conceptually Accurate Signed English, Signed Exact English, Manually Coded English, and Pidgin Signed English
Interpreting strategies and techniques necessary to accommodate individual needs of students in a variety of educational settings
Foundational concepts of deaf culture
Curriculum used in educational settings from preschool through secondary schools

Requires the ability to speak and write English clearly with proper structure
Able to stand for extended periods of time
Interpret and communicate fluently with high proficiency (over 80% of content) in the signlanguage system appropriate to the individual needs of the students
Maintain confidentiality and impartiality when dealing with private and sensitive information
Demonstrate sensitivity to the communication process between persons who are deaf or hard of hearing and the needs of the persons involved in that process
Well-developed arm, hand, and finger dexterity in order to perform advanced signlanguageinterpretation for up to twenty-five hours per week
Visual acuity to see information to be voiced (such as signlanguage and facial expressions) and detect speech patterns
Hearing acuity sufficient to understand information to be interpreted in a variety of educational environments
Facial dexterity to produce readable mouth movements for specific signlanguage expressions
Sufficient manual dexterity to produce readable signlanguage through movement of fingers and arms

Licenses and certificates
To qualify for the certified Interpreter, applicant must possess one of the following certifications:
Educational Interpreter Performance Evaluation (EIPA), level 4 or above
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (ACC1), level 4 or above
NAD certification, level 4 or above
Educational Signs Skills Evaluation Interpreter (ESSE-1), level 4 or above
Interpreters who have not yet obtained the required certification must be eligible for a certification waiver from the California Department of Education and must fulfill one of the following requirements in order to be placed on the eligibility list:
provide proof of having taken one of the certification exams listed above, along with the score achieved
complete the Boys Town National Research Hospital Prescreening Assessment, administered by SBCEO or by an organization recognized by SBCEO.
May require a valid California driver's license and insurance coverage required by law.
Working conditions
Work is performed in a classroom, office, and intermittent outdoor environments where minimal health and safety concerns exist.
Supplemental Information
Classified salary ranges have 26 steps (A-Z). Initial salary placement for new hires is between steps A and J, based on qualifications.

This position may require working some weekend and evening hours as needed. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable state and CSU policies, Accessibility Services (AS) provides eligible students with disabilities academic support services, disability counseling, campus and community resources, and strategies necessary to provide them with an accessible educational experience. Accessibility Services ensures that Cal State East Bay's campus climate is inclusive and facilitates academic accommodations in all areas of learning.
The purpose of this position is to provide communication access via signlanguageinterpreting/transliterating services for students, faculty, staff and guests of the campus who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing. Signlanguageinterpreting/transliterating services may be needed in academic courses, meetings, office hours, student groups, and/or campus events. These services may be required to be provided on-site at one of Cal State East Bay's three campuses: Hayward, Concord, and/or Oakland.
Incumbent must possess and maintain skills certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or certification from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); possible substitution for years of formal training and/or experience in higher education professional interpreting work will be considered.
Responsibilities
* Provide professional level signlanguageinterpreting/transliterating services for students, faculty, staff and guests of the campus who are Deaf, hard-of-hearing, or deaf-blind in a variety of assignments across campus.
* Interpret or transliterate classroom instruction and campus-related assignments beyond the classroom (i.e., meetings, review sessions, field experiences), as needed.
* Interpret or transliterate for campus-wide events (i.e., Fall Convocation, Honors Convocation, Commencement Ceremonies, etc.), as needed.
* Interpret or transliterate for Accessibility Services department-sponsored events, as needed.
* When available, substitute when other interpreters are absent, as needed.
* Prepare for assignments by reading course materials, reviewing course information in Canvas, etc., as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Certification Requirements:
* Certification from the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or certification from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), or comparable certification.
Education and Experience:
* Generally, wide acquaintance with academic higher education through attendance at or graduation from a four year college or university may be essential to provide interpreting services at a level required for the position assignments.
* Two years (2) of relevant documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings usually are needed to perform at the level required for position assignments.
Knowledge and Abilities:
* Thorough knowledge of the interpreting process.
* Demonstrated understanding of the special communication needs of Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing consumers.

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience:
* Requires broad experience with higher education and/or complex subject matter presented at the university level.
* Currently attend, or have graduated from, a four-year university in order to effectively understand student needs in various university settings and ensure effective delivery of services.
* Excellent English vocabulary, grammar, and spelling skills and familiarity with university-level curriculum.
Skills and Abilities:
* Possess a high degree of linguistic, cognitive, and technical skills.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* SignLanguageInterpreter I: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of two (2) years' experience. OR
* SignLanguageInterpreter II: High school graduate or equivalent, graduated from interpreter training program and combination of three (3) years' experience and shall provide proof of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) in process.OR
* SignLanguageInterpreter III: High school graduate or equivalent graduated from interpreter training program and combination of more than five (5+) years' experience, and shall possess Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification. AND
* Signlanguageinterpreters must have a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, have excellent listening skills, and a solid grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, and punctuation.
* They must possess strong receptive and expressive communication skills as well as understand the message, convey the register, tone, intent, and content of the speaker.
* They must be able to accurately convey information from one language to another.
* Must be able to work effectively with students/faculty. They are required to know their respective industry Professional Code of Ethics and Standards for Professional Practice and Confidentiality.
* Knowledge of:
* Methods and techniques of signing and interpreting for the deaf and hearing impaired. Interpretation and application techniques of American SignLanguage (ASL). Overview
Purpose Statement/Position Summary:
The Language and Cultural Specialist II (Spanish Interpreter), under general supervision, provide interpreting services in a culturally sensitive manner to facilitate communication and the relaying of medical information between speakers of different languages at CHLA; and provide written translations as required in patient encounters such as translation of medical instructions and medication schedules, and any hospital related administrative correspondence with patients/families, including information, education and documentation materials. Collaborates with other health care team members in the delivery of care. Complies with applicable office and hospital policies and procedures particularly relating to patient confidentiality and informed consent. Also assists department with on-the-job training and orientation of new staff interpreters.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience:
* 2+ years' experience interpreting and translating in a healthcare setting, including experience working with the community and/or a target language population with a diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds.
* Competency in written and verbal communication skills in English and the designated foreign language (Spanish).
* Ability to translate and interpret medical terminology.
* Experience interpreting and translating with patients at a full range of developmental and educational levels.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a related discipline preferred.
* Completion of a minimum of 40 hour Healthcare Interpreter training.
* For spoken languageinterpreters: Healthcare Interpreter National Certification or highest national credentialing (where applicable by language) through CCHI or a national organization.
* Translator Certification (where applicable by language) through ATA.
* 85% -90% Score for Language Proficiency from a vendor selected by CHLA.

Education and Experience
* Signlanguageinterpreters are required to complete an Interpreter Training Program (ITP) or have an equivalent level of experience.
* Interpreters are required by their profession to work towards and seek various levels of professional certification that are recognized on a state and national level as being appropriate in a post-secondary setting, including but not limited to NIC Certification granted by RID (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf).
* National Interpreter Certification (NIC) preferred, not required.
* Minimum 2 years volunteer and/or paid experience, or completion of a 4-year degree in Deaf Studies or related field.
